I always remember a kind of stillness around the evening time we would be heading home for the night.
This quiet memory comes from several occasion in my childhood. Walking the couple miles back to the village from on the River Irvine , going home after hours of playing football along by the swing park or finishing bramble picking with the whole family, grandparents included, in the dying light of the day.Walking the whole way back in the fading autumn light – there was always a quietness and tranquility to heading home.
The reminiscence is even more vivid as I recall the coal smoke rising from cottage chimneys, adding an impressionistic haze to the sunset.
This feeling remains with me to this day, and one of the reasons I love the autumn evening light so much. What made the experience even more delightful was the roaring fire that would be waiting for the returning travellers. It remains always in my mind that feeling of being warm next to the fire and also the smell of burning coal that would be so comforting to me.I hope you can get the same sense of the warmth of those wonderful days from this family scene.
