Jenny-Brenda Musungay is a Congolese - British Mixed-Media Artist, Graphic Designer and Poet born in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Languages: French and English).
Jenny's family left D.R.C when she was only 15 months old to live in Johannesburg,
South Africa. There she attended North Cliff Primary School.
In 1998 her family relocated to West London, England.
At school, Jenny was the despair of her art teacher who, unable to translate huge piles of her sketchbooks packed full of "scrawls and numbers", begged her to "please just draw these up into something recognisable". In Jenny's mind however, these "scrawls" clearly and obviously translated into a finished piece of art!
Her art is inspired by artists such as Hannah Höch, John Heartfield and Romare Bearden, where layering of different mediums can be seen to be interspersed with collages in an Editorial style, as well as Pablo Picasso with the mixing of her appreciation of female anatomy and the vivid, geometric shapes of Cubism and Neo-Expressionism. Her Digital Art and Collages pick heavily from themes of spirituality and Buddhism highlighting points related to the Heart chakra (Love healing) and the Sacral chakra (Sexuality Creativity).
ABOUT 'AN OBLIQUE ALLUSION' COLLECTION
Using playful cartoon images juxtaposed against the darker side of life, Jenny-B astutely highlights the political history of her homeland, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, where abundant natural resources such as diamonds - and more recently Coltan - are inevitably a focus for greed.
Artfully using images torn from magazines in collage form to highlight both the positive and less worthy side of her heritage, Jenny has produced these provocative pieces. If you look deeply, you can see past the comic book strip to the damaging desire for wealth, power and control beyond.
